Tampons are excellent for activities like swimming and are more popular amongst females when they get used to having their periods.

Pads are constructed of absorbent materials designed to absorb menstrual fluid and come in a variety of thicknesses and absorbencies. A pad’s thickness does not always mean a pad is more absorbent. For example, ultra-thin pads are thinner and more discrete and do the same job as extra pads. A pad’s absorbency can also be determined by its length – with longer pads able to absorb more.

Pads come in a variety of sizes and thicknesses. You’ll see descriptions like; Ultrathin, Regular, Super, Overnight Regular, and Overnight Long. Regular is ideal for everyday usage during medium flow, while Super and Nighttime absorbencies are best for heavy- flow and overnight use.

Using Pads at Night

When it’s time for bed it’s best to wear a pad rather than a tampon. Overnight pads are your best option as they come in both regular and longer lengths, and feature a wider back, this will give you extra protection and prevent leakage while you’re lying down and shifting positions as you sleep.

Many girls will choose to use pads when they get their first period, but it’s really up to the individual.
