As such, these plastic lined coffee cups are notoriously difficult to recycle; not recyclable via most local council kerbside collection programs and currently accepted for recycling in only a handful of council collections.<\/p><p>When well-meaning folk erroneously place their coffee cups in recycling bins, this can contaminate the higher value plastic that <em>can <\/em>be recycled \u2013 often resulting in the entire load bound for landfill. And with their plastic content, most can\u2019t be efficiently processed in paper recycling mills, so the majority are incinerated, or sent to landfill.<\/p><p>BioPak estimate up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2016-02-03\/takeaway-coffee-cups-piling-up-in-landfill\/7136926\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">90 percent of <\/a>single-use hot beverage cups head to landfill. Sadly, these also end up in the natural environment: according to datasets that include Clean Up Australia, Keep Australia Beautiful and the Australian Marine Debris Initiative, coffee cups are some of the most habitually littered items on this continent.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-ae5eef0 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"ae5eef0\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-93a133a\" data-id=\"93a133a\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-58f2aa4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"58f2aa4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>With the exception of Tasmania, most States and Territories have already banned, or are committed to banning, single-use plastics, including plastic lightweight carrier bags, straws, drink stirrers, cutlery, and plates and bowls. The plastic coating of disposable coffee cups has the potential to degrade into microplastics over time, especially if the cups are exposed to heat or moisture. If you drink coffee regularly from a takeaway cup, there\u2019s a good possibility that you\u2019re consuming microplastics daily. Most of these plastic linings are regarded as \u2018safe\u2019 but have been shown to leak estrogenic chemicals, which infiltrate your body system. Reusable cups not only reduce landfill waste and help save our planet, but with no plastics involved, you\u2019re unlikely to consume any nasty microplastics or chemicals.
