{"id":61957,"date":"2026-11-05T00:57:25","date_gmt":"2026-11-05T00:57:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cos.net.au\/c\/?p=61957"},"modified":"2026-11-05T00:57:25","modified_gmt":"2026-11-05T00:57:25","slug":"taking-action-on-modern-slavery-cos-supports-anti-slavery-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cos.net.au\/c\/news\/taking-action-on-modern-slavery-cos-supports-anti-slavery-australia","title":{"rendered":"Taking action on modern slavery: COS supports Anti-Slavery Australia\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">COS is proud to announce a new partnership between the <a href=\"https:\/\/lyonefoundation.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lyone Foundation<\/a> and Anti-Slavery Australia, strengthening access to specialist legal assistance for people who have experienced or are at risk of modern slavery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the partnership, the Lyone Foundation will provide approximately $107,000 to fund a full-time paralegal within Anti-Slavery Australia\u2019s legal practice for 12 months.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>An extension of COS\u2019s modern slavery commitment<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At COS, we recognise our responsibility to respect human rights and identify and address modern slavery risks connected to our operations and supply chains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since releasing our first Modern Slavery Statement, we have continued to strengthen our approach through supplier risk assessments, ethical sourcing requirements, supplier and factory reviews, staff education, industry engagement and improved governance and reporting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cos.net.au\/c\/modern-slavery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">modern slavery commitments<\/a> include reviewing our risk assessment methodology, strengthening oversight of direct and indirect suppliers, examining higher-risk service areas and participating in industry discussions that build awareness and capability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also committed to exploring opportunities to support Australian charities working to address modern slavery. This new partnership with Anti-Slavery Australia puts that commitment into action.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Strengthening frontline legal support<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based at the UTS Faculty of Law, Anti-Slavery Australia provides free and confidential legal and migration services to people affected by human trafficking, forced labour, forced marriage and other forms of exploitation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Demand for its specialist legal services continues to grow. The new paralegal will support its solicitors with:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Client intake and engagement\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Legal and policy research\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Case preparation and documentation\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Case management\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Referrals and coordination with other support services\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Supervision of law students\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By strengthening this support capacity, Anti-Slavery Australia\u2019s lawyers will be able to spend more time providing specialist legal advice and representation to clients with complex needs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The position is expected to improve client responsiveness, help matters progress more efficiently and enable a greater number of survivors to access legal support.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Supporting prevention and response<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Addressing modern slavery requires action at every level.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within our business, COS continues to strengthen the way we identify and manage risks across our operations and supply chains.
