The role of school principal is a unique one and not for the faint hearted. Like any senior management position where decisions impacting diverse individuals are made, it\u2019s inevitable that you won\u2019t please everyone, all the time.<\/p>

These challenges can be even greater when the people at the\u00a0centre\u00a0of it all are budding works in progress and precious apples of their parent\u2019s eyes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

There aren\u2019t many positions where the demographic of the stakeholders you\u2019re responsible for is so vast, and include children, teachers, parents, boards, community members and beyond. Much of what impacts any one of these groups within the school community is out of your control and yet you\u2019re on the frontline for complaints.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

A thick skin is mandatory. If you\u2019re too soft, you\u2019ll be criticised and equally if you\u2019re too strict. It\u2019s a delicate tightrope balance that over 9,000 principals in Australia work tirelessly to achieve throughout the school calendar year.\u00a0 They wear so many hats and today, on School Principals\u2019 Day, we acknowledge and thank them for their enormous contribution.<\/p>

School Principals: The Hardest Workers<\/h2>

A recent Principal Health study\u00a0has revealed high exhaustion levels amongst principals.\u00a0 Like our\u00a0hard-working\u00a0teachers, they face escalating demands and long hours.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Our children can benefit through teachers, principals and parents working cooperatively together, and we can set an example by acknowledging and being sensitive to everyone\u2019s respective efforts and needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The\u00a0Principal Health Report 2017\u00a0states that no single stakeholder group is responsible for the state of education in Australia. While school principals play a huge role in the quality of education at their school, they don\u2019t have the power to change the system, and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0important we\u00a0recognise\u00a0their limitations as well as their achievements.<\/p>

Support goes both ways<\/h2>

I can\u2019t thank the principal and assistant principal of my primary age son\u2019s school enough for their compassion, perseverance and level-headedness last year when he had a particularly tough and emotionally taxing year at school.\u00a0 It was a stressful time for the entire family.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

He was just one student amongst several hundred, and yet they offered us their undivided attention and support and even an email or two well outside of school hours to check on us. I thank\u00a0both of these\u00a0ladies sincerely for their composure and attention whilst juggling so much else.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Of course,\u00a0we must advocate for our children when they are struggling, that\u2019s our responsibility as adults and parents. It\u2019s also important to show compassion for our principals and teachers. It\u2019s not always easy, but where concerns need to be\u00a0raised,\u00a0we can try to communicate them constructively.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Today and each day during the school year let\u2019s remember our principals and their team of teachers and admin staff, all human beings doing their very best. Let\u2019s support and encourage each other and thank them for all that they do so well.<\/p>

Ways to show appreciation<\/h2>

As some of the hardest working people in education, it\u2019s only fitting that on School Principal Day, we take the time to say \u201cthank you\u201d for all they do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

A simple message of appreciation can go a long way, and if you don\u2019t get a chance to speak with your school principal in person, an email or card is an easy way to show your appreciation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

To take things a step further, consider a kind gift such as a fruit basket or\u00a0box of chocolates<\/a>. A token of gratitude is a kind way of acknowledging the hours, effort and workload behind being School Principal.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
