Even fish and shellfish now contain varying levels of microplastics as a result of plastic pollution in the oceans. Makes you think twice about that smoked salmon bagel, doesn\u2019t it? Retail giants Coles and Woolworths have pledged to reduce plastic use for fresh foods, and other companies have replaced plastic bags with sustainable options.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further encouraging action includes the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/stillmed.olympic.org\/media\/Document%20Library\/OlympicOrg\/IOC\/What-We-Do\/celebrate-olympic-games\/Sustainability\/IOC-Sustainability-Report-2018.pdf#_ga=2.135388145.1597694393.1544670922-1351691961.1544670922\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Olympic Committee<\/a>&nbsp;announcing their intention to eradicate single-use plastics from the&nbsp;organisation&nbsp;and its events around the world.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After many years of escalating concern over the environmental impacts of plastic pollution, such actions are a welcome development and a reflection of the change in attitudes toward sustainability.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of&nbsp;these moves are important for the&nbsp;future&nbsp;of our&nbsp;planet, but what can we do as individuals to contribute to the change? Is there a limit&nbsp;to our&nbsp;own impact on the plastic problem?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Things we can do to reduce plastic waste<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"Calibri, sans-serif\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Switch to biodegradable or reusable bags.<br>One&nbsp;report suggests that if each person in Australia&nbsp;swaps to&nbsp;renewable shopping bags, we could divert 2,200 truckloads of plastic from landfill each year.&nbsp;That\u2019s a huge number! For those who rely on&nbsp;disposable&nbsp;bags for rubbish, consider a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cos.net.au\/index.html?pg=groupsearch&amp;major=40&amp;minor=90&amp;all_stock=Y&amp;narrow_major=&amp;narrow_minor=&amp;narrow_sub=&amp;narrow_brand=&amp;narrow_symbol=%7Crefsymb_pf&amp;narrow_pricerange_lower=-1.00&amp;narrow_pricerange_upper=215.00&amp;search_view=grid&amp;isbrandsearch=\">non-plastic biodegradable option<\/a>.<\/li><li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"Calibri, sans-serif\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Buy recycled plastics<br>It\u2019s surprising how many environmentally-friendly alternatives there are available.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cos.net.au\/index.html?pg=searchresultsdisplay&amp;search_type=K&amp;search_string=recycled+plastic&amp;search_values=&amp;searchlogtype=KE\">Everyday office products<\/a>&nbsp;such as staplers, bins, binders, pens and even bubble wrap can be made from recycled plastic. At present, only 14% of plastics are recovered for recycling. With a simple choice to purchase recycled plastics, we can increase that&nbsp;percentage.<\/li><li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"Calibri, sans-serif\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Invest in a reusable coffee cup<br>If you love grabbing a morning coffee on the way to work, ask your&nbsp;barrister&nbsp;to fill your personal cup and avoid plastic cups and lids.&nbsp;It\u2019s cheaper for them and better for the environment. Win-win!<\/li><li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"Calibri, sans-serif\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Cater with eco-friendly party supplies<br>The convenience of disposable cups, plates and cutlery is just too tempting when it comes to large events.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cos.net.au\/index.html?pg=groupsearch&amp;major=10&amp;minor=55&amp;all_stock=Y&amp;narrow_major=&amp;narrow_minor=&amp;narrow_sub=&amp;narrow_brand=&amp;narrow_symbol=%7Crefsymb_pf&amp;narrow_pricerange_lower=-1.00&amp;narrow_pricerange_upper=414.00&amp;search_view=grid&amp;isbrandsearch=\">Eco-friendly options are available<\/a>&nbsp;though, and they\u2019re much kinder to the environment, so you can still get away&nbsp;without&nbsp;having to do the dishes.<\/li><li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"Calibri, sans-serif\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Make your voice and choice heard<br>By purchasing food with no plastic packaging, refusing straws in our fizzy drinks and taking our own bags to the shops, we can have a large impact by way of supply and demand. Support environmentally-ethical companies&nbsp;who take a strong stance on&nbsp;sustainability and&nbsp;put your money towards a healthier future for the planet.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also worth&nbsp;contacting government representatives and&nbsp;organisations&nbsp;to voice your concern over industrial practices \u2013 as they affect all of us.&nbsp;For example, the amount of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/d31j74p4lpxrfp.cloudfront.net\/sites\/default\/files\/ca_-_en_files\/ghosts_beneath_the_waves_2018_web_singles.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plastic waste from commercial fisheries<\/a>&nbsp;is disproportionately large compared to straws and other consumer plastics. An older man nearby observed that there were hundreds of starfish along the shore and told the young boy that he\u2019d never be able to save them all. The young boy smiled as he held a helpless starfish in his hand and said, \u201cI can save this one!\u201d<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plastic problem might appear as overwhelming as starfish on the beach,&nbsp;although&nbsp;in all likelihood, it\u2019s&nbsp;more likely to be plastic pollution that washes up now. We buy one million plastic drinking bottles every minute and use roughly 500 billion disposable plastic bags every year.
