This year I\u2019ll be tidier, more organised, I&#8217;ll lose weight or eat healthier. How many times have you actually achieved these New Years resolutions? For many of us, the answer is \u201cnever\u201d, and the excuse always seems to be because something came up or interest faded away within a couple of months.<\/p><p>The problem is that we expect these New Year resolutions to be achieved overnight. And maybe you can exercise more or eat better, but how long will it be until you have some late nights and early mornings and you start getting takeaway for lunch again?<\/p><p>What you need are goals rather than resolutions.\u00a0Goals\u00a0are gradual and help you to form habits over time,\u00a0rather than just hoping they\u2019ll appear out of nowhere.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>And that\u2019s just for personal resolutions; work resolutions tend to fall flat so much faster. Rick McDaniel, the author of <i>5 Habits of Healthy Peopl<\/i>e, says\u00a0\u201cGoal setters are comfortable with risk, prefer innovation and are\u00a0energised\u00a0by change.\u201d These traits are becoming increasingly important in the modern workplace.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>More than this, settings goals and sticking to them has been linked with a boost in self-confidence, motivation and autonomy (Locke &amp; Lathan, 2006). So, if it\u2019s a promotion you\u2019re aiming for this year, it\u2019s time to set yourself goals that will get you there.<\/p><h3>The benefits of work goals<\/h3><p>It\u2019s one thing to set a goal but another to follow through. <span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ol><li>The first step is to make sure your goal is realistic\u00a0for\u00a0the timeframe you want. You need to either have the skills, or factor in that you\u2019ll need to develop the skills to achieve your goal. You really need to be specific\u00a0about\u00a0how the outcome looks and when you want to get there.\u00a0If you aren\u2019t sure exactly what you\u2019re\u00a0actually aiming\u00a0for,\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0lose motivation for an open-ended goal and you won\u2019t be able to outline the steps you need to get to the end\u00a0point.<\/li><li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"Calibri, sans-serif\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Once you have constructed a\u00a0realistic goal, you need to work out how you will achieve it. For a successful goal, you need an action plan to go alongside it. These subtasks should start off simply\u00a0and develop into the trickier tasks as you near your goal. This allows you to form habits for lasting change.<\/li><li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"Calibri, sans-serif\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Finally, don\u2019t despair. Hiccups always happen in this crazy thing we call life. Rather than give\u00a0up or stop working on your goal, be a bit flexible. You may have envisioned a single path of stepping stones, but the reality is that you may need a few side steps to get you to the end.\u00a0Besides, it\u00a0isn\u2019t all about the goal but the journey that gets you there. You can always give staff tasks to complete and they can dive in blindly, but they will work more efficiently and produce better outcomes if they can see the goal they are working towards. You\u2019ll also avoid productivity slumps if they can see their task or goal is achievable.<\/p><h3>Write down your goals<\/h3><p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oakjournal.com\/blogs\/resources\/the-power-of-writing-down-your-goals-evidence-from-multiple-studies#:~:text=The%20first%20study%20that%20we,than%20those%20who%20did%20not.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2015 psychology\u00a0study<\/a> found that people\u00a0who\u00a0write their goals down in a journal or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cos.net.au\/category\/diaries-and-planners\">diary<\/a> rather than simply formulating them in their heads are 33% more likely to reach them.<\/p><h3><strong><span class=\"TextRun SCXW245020429\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW245020429\">Don\u2019t spend your tim<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW245020429\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW245020429\">e\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"SpellingError SCXW245020429\">fantasising<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h3><p><span class=\"SpellingError SCXW245020429\">Fantasising<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW245020429\">\u00a0about the outcomes of your goal\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"AdvancedProofingIssue SCXW245020429\">actually tricks<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW245020429\"> your brain into thinking you\u2019ve already achieved it.
