Whether you’re a parent encouraging your child’s imagination, a teacher looking for an affordable classroom resource, or an artist in need of a lightweight display stand, a cardboard easel is a smart, eco-friendly choice.
By upcycling cardboard, you’re not only reducing waste, you’re giving it a second life. In this guide, we’ll take you step-by-step through building your own cardboard easel.
🧰 What You’ll Need:
- 1 large cardboard/carton box (e.g., a shipping or moving box)
- Scissors or a snap cutter
- Duct tape or packing tape
- Double sided tape
- Optional: Paint, markers, crayons, or stickers for decoration
✂️Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Choose and Flatten the Box
Open the cardboard box completely using a snap cutter or scissors and lay it flat. Remove any flaps if necessary.
2. Cut Two Equal Panels
Cut out two large rectangular pieces from the box. Each should be around 40cm x 60cm (adjust depending on your preference). These will form the front and back of the easel.
3. Form the Easel Shape
Position the two panels together in a standing ‘A’ frame or tent-like shape, with the top corners touching.
4. Secure the Top
Use duct tape to attach the top edges of the panels together. This creates a foldable stand that opens like a tent.
5. Add Double-Sided Tape
Stick double-sided tape to each corner on both sides of the panels. This will help hold the easel panels in place and provide extra stability when it’s standing.
5. Make a Support Strap
Cut a long strip of duct tape (about 66cm or 26 inches long). Tape one end to the bottom edge of one panel where you placed the double-sided tape), then stretch it across and secure the other end to the opposite panel. This strap will prevent the easel from opening too wide and help it maintain its shape.
6. Attach the Artwork Sheet
Choose a sheet smaller than your easel panels. Use masking tape around the edges of the sheet, then stick it in the centre of one panel.
8. Decorate!
Decorate your easel using paint, stickers, markers, or colorful paper. Make it as fun and personal as you like!
