How to Keep Children Motivated During Remote Learning

Who would have guessed home schooling would become the new normal? In the last year, Australia’s education system has changed dramatically, with schools across the country shifting to online remote learning. Even though it feels like we’ve been doing it forever, remote learning can be a real challenge for some children, and their parents.

According to the World Economic Forum, more than 1.2 billion children in 186 countries are currently affected by school closures due to the pandemic. The WHO report states that students often feel discouraged, distracted, and isolated due to a lack of face-to-face interaction with both peers and teachers.

The transition has been difficult for most of us, but it has been especially difficult for young children who have had remote learning forced upon them. As a result, parents across the globe are trying to find innovative ways to balance their own work, while keeping their children focused on their studies.

As a parent, you are probably running out of ideas for keeping your kids motivated during this difficult time. We all know that without motivation, even the most exciting lessons and activities can fail to grasp a child’s attention, leading to boredom and frustration. So to help you get started, we have put together some tips for keeping your young students motivated during remote learning.

Create a fixed routine

Children need routine, which is especially tricky when our days have been turned upside down. Keeping a schedule keeps your children focused, and their day structured. Create a timetable that resembles the activities of a typical school day, such as lunch, recess, and breaks in between classes. Post your simple daily schedule, whatever works for you, in a place where your kids can easily see it.

Limit distractions

There is a fixed schedule for online lessons, and as parents, it’s best to keep distractions to a minimum during this time. As everyone is working remotely, there is a lot going on in everyone’s home. If possible, find a quiet space for your child to attend a school where they’re not interrupted. The less hustle and bustle around them, the less distraction while they learn.

Add some fun elements

Home schooling is like a traditional school — just without the fun part. The lack of face-to-face interaction and lunchtime hangouts with friends can have a real effect on a child’s motivation. Try to find ways to add a dose of excitement and fun back into their days. During recess, give them some time to play or encourage them to have a virtual lunch break with their friends.

Keep them active

According to Transform-Us, children in Australia spend around 64% of their time sitting. So, during home schooling, it’s important for parents to minimise their kid’s sitting time while studying. Your child’s education is important, but don’t neglect daily movement as it helps facilitate online learning. With team sports and extra-curricular activities on hold, the best way to keep them physically active is to simply go outside for walks, or to a playground to play some games. Getting outside for some activity not only allows you to get some fresh air but also gives you a little quality time with your kids.

Designated learning space

Most of you might have a designated workspace for yourself in your home, similarly, it’s important to create a space for your child that’s strictly devoted to learning. If possible, avoid keeping school books and stationery all over the kitchen table and common areas. Dedicate a quiet, welcoming, and bright space that is free from possible distractions and encourage your young ones to personalise this space and keep it tidy, so that they can look forward to spending quality time there every day.

Parental support is extremely helpful in keeping youngsters supported and motivated during this tricky time. To turn a bit of a negative into a positive, this is a golden opportunity for parents to spend a little more quality time with their children, indulging in their favourite activities, and giving them more attention. But remember, it’s also essential for you to take care of yourself, which will allow you to provide a healthy and positive environment so that your children can thrive and grow. You’re doing a great job!
