Remembrance Day is a time to pause, reflect, and honour those who have served. Helping children understand the meaning behind this day can be both heartfelt and fun through creative activities that inspire empathy and respect.
We’ve put together two engaging craft worksheets for kids. A poppy wreath colouring page and a poppy pinwheel activity to make learning hands-on and meaningful. As children colour, cut, and create, they’ll strengthen their fine motor skills while discovering the story and symbolism of the poppy, and why it’s such an important part of remembering those who fought for peace.
Perfect for classrooms or at-home learning, these activities offer a gentle and thoughtful way for children to connect with the spirit of Remembrance Day, encouraging gratitude, creativity, and reflection.
1. Remembrance Day - Poppy Wreath
Materials Required:
- Printable Remembrance Day Wreath template
- Coloured pencils, crayons, or markers (for colouring the poppies and leaves)
- Scissors
- Ribbon or twine (for hanging the wreath)
- Hole punch (optional to make a hole for the ribbon)
- Glue stick or PVA glue
- Pom-poms, rhinestones, or jewels (optional)
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Print Your Wreath Template
Download and print the Remembrance Day Poppy Wreath template. This will be your base and already includes outlines of poppies and leaves ready to colour and decorate.
2. Colour the Wreath
Now it’s time to bring your wreath to life with colour:
- Poppies should be coloured bright red, with their centres black to represent the traditional Remembrance poppy.
Leaves can be coloured in different shades of green to add depth and detail.
3. Cut Out the Wreath
Once you’ve finished colouring, carefully cut along the outer and inner edges of the wreath to create a circular shape.
4. Write Your Message
Use the banner provided on the worksheet to write a message, such as “Lest We Forget”, or a personal message of your choice.
Cut out the banner and attach it to the centre of your wreath using a glue stick.
5. Add a Finishing Touch
Glue or tie a ribbon to the top so it can be hung on a wall or classroom display. For a little extra sparkle, decorate it with pom-poms, jewels, or rhinestones to make your wreath stand out.
6. Present or Display Your Wreath
Once your wreath is complete, you can:
- Hang it up at home or in the classroom to show your respect for Remembrance Day.
Use it as part of a Remembrance Day assembly or bulletin board display.

2. Remembrance Day - Pinwheel
Materials Required:
- Printable Remembrance Day Pinwheel template (worksheet)
- Coloured pencils, crayons, or markers (to decorate the pinwheel)
- Scissors
- Pipe cleaner/straw
- Push pin/paper binder or thumbtack
- Small bead (optional helps the pinwheel spin smoothly)
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Decorate the Pinwheel Sheet
Use crayons, coloured markers, or pencils to colour the poppies and banner on your pinwheel sheet.
2. Cut Out the Square
Carefully cut along the printed lines from each corner toward the centre.
Important: Do not cut all the way through the centre.
3. Fold the Corners
Take every second corner of the triangular slits and gently fold it toward the center so that four points meet neatly in the middle. Keep the folds loose enough so the pinwheel can spin freely.
4. Secure the Centre
Choose one method:
Push Pin & Bead: Place a small bead at the centre, then push a pin or thumbtack through it. The bead reduces friction and helps the pinwheel spin smoothly.
Pipe Cleaner: Thread a pipe cleaner through the centre hole. Make a small loop at the front so the pinwheel can spin, and twist the back to hold the points in place.
5. Attach the Stem
Straw: Push the pin (with the bead) through the top of a straw. The straw will hold the pin in place while letting the pinwheel spin freely.
Pipe Cleaner: Thread the pipe cleaner through the centre of the pinwheel. At the back, twist it to hold the points in place.
6. Test the Spin
Gently blow on the pinwheel or move the stem to see it spin. If it feels tight, loosen the centre slightly until it spins smoothly.
7. Finish & Display
Bend the bottom of the pipe cleaner into a hook for hanging, or stick the straw into a small pot of play dough for a table display.
