Employees are now the toughest ESG critics

In a new article by ‘Human Resource Director’, the focus turns to why employees are no longer convinced by glossy ESG reports or high-level pledges, instead, they’re judging sustainability by what they see and experience every day at work.

COS Co-CEO Belinda Lyone, says sustainability has shifted from the “strategy deck” to the “shop floor”, with staff scrutinising sourcing, logistics, infrastructure and supplier decisions to see if commitments truly stack up.“Employees now assess commitments through operational decision-making, not statements alone,” Belinda Lyone explains. “When sustainability is embedded into everyday processes, credibility strengthens. When it’s not, confidence drops fast.”

Belinda Lyone adds that, ESG becomes performative when it lives only in reports rather than in visible, on-the-ground action. For HR leaders, the message is clear: ESG must be part of the lived employee experience, not just corporate messaging. Organisations that embed sustainability into daily operations, not just strategy documents, will be the ones that earn and keep employee trust.
