why waste water

Over 663 million people around the world live without access to a safe water supply. Over 3 billion people queue or trek for hours a day just to reach a water source, and many are dealing with contaminated water. In Australia, where clean water flows freely from the tap, it’s unthinkable.

22 March is World Water Day and this year’s campaign is themed “Why Waste Water?”

The United Nations General Assembly first designated this day in 1993 with the aim of raising awareness of the global water crisis, invoking action to make a difference, as Australian-owned social enterprise Thankyou has done.

Thankyou was founded in 2008 after co-founder Daniel Flynn learnt just how many people didn’t have daily access to safe drinking water. At the time, the Australian bottled water industry was worth around $600 million a year and Australians can easily access safe water by tap.

Daniel engaged a group of friends and they set out to launch a line of bottled water products to fund water projects overseas. Thankyou was born and has since had a huge impact as a growing social enterprise. They direct 100% of their profits towards fighting global poverty and funding life changing projects around the world, while Daniel was awarded 2014 Victorian Young Australian of the Year for his efforts.

They have since expanded their line to include environmentally friendly hand and body wash, skin lotion, hand sanitiser, breakfast products, and a baby range.

Why Waste an Opportunity?

Every 2 minutes, a child dies from a water related disease. Over a million people each year are killed by water sanitation and hygiene-related disease each year, and the injury and impact of carrying water over long distances is even greater.

Through Thankyou, we have an opportunity to make a difference for these people, so they too can access clean, local water.

Each Thankyou product comes with a unique product code which allows you to track your impact. It’s rewarding to see that purchasing a simple bottle of water here can have such far reaching effects on communities who need it. COS™ sales alone have helped 132,664 people already, in 4 different countries.

Making a Difference

As the famous John F. Kennedy said: “One person can make a difference, and everyone should try.” Thankyou’s huge impact began with just one person’s intention to do something good and has grown into a business that has impacted over 545,360 people across 17 countries.

If you’re not sure where to start, consider lending your support to established and credible social enterprises, just like Thankyou. Social enterprises apply commercial strategies to maximise social, environmental, cultural and economic improvements.  There are approximately 20,000 social enterprises operating around Australia – that’s a lot of opportunities to get behind worthy social causes and make a difference.
